PC Oliveira Says Referee Made Key Error in Palmeiras vs Remo Match

PC de Oliveira reviewed the disallowed goal by Bruno Fuchs in the clash between Palmeiras and Remo, calling it a clear refereeing mistake. The goal, which would have given Abel Ferreira’s side a win in stoppage time, sparked widespread debate. Speaking on Sportv’s “Fechamento” program, Oliveira explained the current rule and why the decision was wrong.

“When analyzing this play, we must consider two aspects: the rule itself and how referees are trained. Until 2021, any goal that came right after a handball had to be disallowed, whether the player who handled the ball scored or a teammate did. However, after the 2021 Club World Cup final, where Bayern Munich scored following a handball by Lewandowski that went to a teammate, FIFA and IFAB changed the rule. Now, the goal is only voided if the player who handled the ball scores himself. If it goes to a teammate, the goal is valid,” Oliveira said.

He stressed that Palmeiras’ goal should have stood. “The ball accidentally hit Flaco López’s arm in a challenge and then went to Bruno Fuchs. Under the current rules, the goal must be allowed. That’s exactly what the rulebook says.”

Bruno Fuchs, who scored the disallowed goal, also criticized the decision. The match ended 1-1 at Mangueirão stadium in Belém. “I told the referee, if Flaco had scored, it would have to be disallowed. But the ball hit his hand and fell to me. It wasn’t intentional. The rule is clear: if it goes to a teammate, the goal counts. I tried to explain, but they didn’t listen. Maybe the referees need to know the rules better,” the defender said.

The match was delayed by over an hour and a half due to heavy rain in Belém, and Palmeiras left disappointed with the draw.
