Vincent Kompany has taken issue with comments made by Bayern Munich’s Tom Bischof, who recently spoke openly about the team’s defensive struggles. The 20-year-old midfielder answered a reporter’s tough questions with unusual honesty, agreeing that the club has been conceding too many goals lately.
“We’re simply not doing the basic things anymore,” said the German U21 international, adding that his time on the sidelines due to injury gave him a clearer perspective. “I’ve watched a few games from the stands, unfortunately. The counter-pressing right after we lose the ball has been missing in recent matches. I noticed that from the outside.”
When asked about Bischof’s remarks, the Bayern boss gave a lengthy response. “No, of course I don’t agree with him,” Kompany began, directly contradicting his player. “The young player made a mistake in that interview. You can’t counter-press a hundred times if you lose possession quickly. That’s the real problem. It’s not about the intention behind the counter-pressing.”
Kompany concluded in a more measured tone: “I’ll definitely speak to him about it. I’m sure he’ll say the exact same thing in a few years.”
Bayern finally kept a clean sheet on Saturday, though Jonas Urbig’s multiple saves in the first half were crucial in the narrow win over Wolfsburg.
